A Celebration of Miss Lavelle White

Austin, TX – Marcia Ball, Carolyn Wonderland , Ruthie Foster, Shelley King and a cast of Texas music headliners and sidemen perform as part of an all-night, all-star tribute and celebrate the legendary singer, songwriter Miss Lavelle White by releasing “HOME IS WHERE THE MUSIC IS”, a CD recorded in October 2012 at Antone’s Home Of The Blues in Austin, Texas.

H.O.M.E (Housing Opportunities for Musicians & Entertainers) strives to create more security for aging musicians of the Austin, Texas music scene, by pursuing low cost housing for them, and providing other assistance, including referrals to other available resources.  The performers who put Austin on the musical map have spent most of their careers working without a safety net. As they age, the fall from the tight rope becomes increasingly perilous.  H.O.M.E. works to channel the generous donations of those who love Austin music toward easing those challenges.

“Over the course of seven decades of performance, soul music’s own Lavelle White (“Miss Lavelle” to fans and friends) has shared the stage with the likes of Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Buddy Guy and scores of others. Her songs, including “I’m Gonna Make It,” “If I Could Only Be With You” and “Lead Me On” (a massive hit for Bobby Blue Bland) have proven as durable as their creator.
But a resumé does not pay the rent and as 2012 dawned, Miss Lavelle—who has lived in Austin, Texas for over 20 years--found herself in perilous straits and in need of affordable housing.
Cue the heroines of HOME (Housing Opportunities for Musicians & Entertainers), a collective of some of the city’s most respected female performers and music industry professionals. They sprang into action (and when Texas women spring, brother, they spring) and organized a concert and silent auction to come to the aid of a woman who had been a friend and inspiration to them all.
Cut to October 1, 2012 as a star-studded lineup performing White’s own songs takes the stage at Antone’s, Austin’s celebrated “Home of the Blues”: Grammy-nominees Marcia Ball and Ruthie Foster, Kathy Valentine (of the Go-Gos and the Bluebonnets), Sara Hickman (2010’s Official State Musician of Texas), Austin blues eminence W.C. Clark, Rosie Flores, Sarah Brown, Emily Gimble, Guy Forsyth and Cindy Cashdollar, Carolyn Wonderland, Shelley King, Debbi Walton and, of course, Miss Lavelle herself, still tearing it up after 83 years.
It was a night full of great music, warm camaraderie and instant memories. But more importantly, the event raised money and awareness of the ongoing issue of affordable housing for creative professionals. Today, Miss Lavelle is still going strong and sleeping under her own roof, proving (as if there was any doubt) that HOME is where the heart is.” John T. Davis
